Peanut Butter Fruit: Part Duex

Two years ago, I posted about our peanut butter fruit tree, which had given us a few rather disappointing orange fruit that tasted a bit like peanut butter but wasn’t really anything special.

Fast forward to this week and I’m picking up the eggs from the hens and I notice tons of fruits on the tree. It was getting dark, but I leaned over the fence and picked as much as I could reach.

I got back in the house and looked down at the handful and realized, crap. They’d been hard the last time and we suspected they were unripe. So I left them out until Mr. Pikko got home.

The next day, I went to go look at them and some of them had started to turn red! Then the next day after that, three of them were fully red and mushy and soft! I figured this must be how they were supposed to be picked, even though we’d read that they bear “orange fruit.”

140221-Peanut-Butter-Fruit1As you can see, there’s a big difference in color. The orange ones are super hard and therefore unripe. I was able to just squish a red one with my fingers.

140221-Peanut-Butter-Fruit2I tasted it and the peanut butter is mild, but present. The texture was like a cooked potato and after the peanut butter taste faded away, a slight fruity taste came out, but I can’t place was fruit it reminded me of.

The tree has about six more fruits left, so it’s bearing more than two years ago, but it still isn’t all that much. Baby Girl tried it, but didn’t like it that much, which is a pity because the whole reason we got the tree was so she could taste peanuts again! Oh well.

Hopefully I’ll find some use for them, otherwise we should probably just cut it down and plant something I’d want actually want, like RAMBUTAN! O_O
