SimpleMarkup #140 – Reputation Research

March and April seemed to take approximately seven hundred years to go by (each), but May feels like it’s going back in the blink of an eye. I mean, I swear it was just early May, and now I turn and look at the date and it’s the middle of the month.

This year is ten kinds of awful but also really strange sometimes.

This week’s comic addresses something that happens to me sometimes. I’ll see a pretty simple question someone asks in a group, crack my knuckles, and get ready to type, and then I’ll pause.

Wait, is that the right answer? What if it’s not? What if I answer with utmost certainty and it turns out to be wrong?! How do you even Google something this simple? Usually I emerge some time later with confirmation that my knee-jerk reaction was correct, but sometimes not.

This usually happens with words. Sometimes I’ll see a word usage and chuckle to myself. And then my editor’s intuition will hit the brakes, and I’ll go check, and sure enough, there’s an accepted usage that I’d never heard of that works. It’s fun to learn, but it also keeps you humble, which is a good thing.

Anyway, no matter the outcome, it usually ends up costing time, and of course just talking about words and rules and what-not isn’t billable, but it sure does feel like work!

Hope you’re having a fantastic week!
